Objective of Air Exercise 4
The purpose of this exercise is to introduce the safe movement of the aircraft on the ground.
Taxiing may look simple from the outside, but it is a real aircraft-handling skill. The pilot must control speed, direction, spacing, braking, wind correction, radio instructions, and situational awareness before the aircraft ever leaves the ground.
At this stage, your goal is not perfection. Your goal is to understand that taxiing is controlled, deliberate, and safety-critical.
Think of this lesson as moving from:
“I am sitting in an aircraft”
to:
“I am beginning to operate an aircraft.”

What Is Taxiing?
Taxiing is the controlled movement of an aircraft on the ground or water.
In normal flight training, taxiing is used to move the aircraft:
● From the apron or parking area
● To the run-up area
● To the takeoff runway
● Back to the apron after landing
● Around the airport movement area as instructed
Taxiing should never be rushed. The aircraft is still an aircraft, even when it is moving slowly on the ground.
The basic goal is simple:
Move the aircraft safely, under control, without creating risk for people, aircraft, vehicles, or property.

Airport Layout and Taxi Clearances
Before taxiing, a pilot should understand the airport layout.
This includes:
● Aprons
● Taxiways
● Runways
● Holding positions
● Run-up areas
● Hot spots
● Intersections
● Possible conflict areas
Taxiways are usually identified by letters such as Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, and so on.
A taxi clearance may sound simple, but the pilot must understand the route before moving. If there is any doubt, ask for clarification before continuing.
A beginner should learn this early:
Never cross a runway unless you have been cleared to cross that runway.
A clearance to taxi does not automatically mean you may cross every runway or enter any area you choose.
When instructed to hold short, hold short. When cleared to cross, cross only the runway or area specified.

If you are unsure where to go, stop safely and ask.
There is no shame in asking for taxi clarification. There is risk in guessing.
A professional habit starts early:
Slow down, confirm the route, then move.

Commencing Taxi
More power is usually required to start the aircraft moving than to keep it moving.
Once the aircraft starts rolling, power should be reduced promptly so the aircraft does not accelerate unnecessarily.
The amount of power required depends on:
● Surface condition
● Aircraft weight
● Wind
● Slope
● Snow, slush, mud, or soft ground
● Whether the aircraft has a nosewheel or tailwheel arrangement
The throttle should be used smoothly. Avoid aggressive bursts of power unless specifically required and briefed.
After the aircraft first begins moving, the brakes should be checked carefully with a smooth stop. This confirms that the brakes are working and gives the pilot a feel for how effective they are.

Taxi Speed
Taxi speed should always allow the pilot to remain in full control.
There is no single perfect taxi speed for every situation. The correct speed depends on the aircraft, surface, wind, visibility, congestion, and airport environment.
The aircraft should move slowly enough that you can stop safely if needed.
A useful beginner rule is:
Do not taxi faster than your brain can think.
Excessive taxi speed creates several risks:
● Poor control
● Increased stopping distance
● Brake overheating
● Reduced time to react
● Greater risk near other aircraft or obstacles
Avoid controlling taxi speed by using high power and constant braking. This is poor technique and can overheat the brakes.
Instead:
● Use only the power required
● Reduce power early
● Let the aircraft slow down
● Brake smoothly when needed

Lookout While Taxiing
Taxiing requires constant lookout.
The pilot must watch for:
● Other aircraft
● Vehicles
● People
● Buildings
● Signs
● Lights
● Snowbanks
● Wingtip clearance
● Propeller danger areas
● Taxiway/runway markings
● Surface condition changes
Some aircraft, especially tailwheel aircraft, may have restricted forward visibility while taxiing. In those cases, the pilot may need to use a gentle weaving path to check the area ahead.
The aircraft should never be moved into an area the pilot has not visually cleared.

Steering and Turning
Many light aircraft use rudder pedals to steer the nosewheel or tailwheel on the ground.
To turn left, left rudder pedal pressure is used.
To turn right, right rudder pedal pressure is used.
To stop the turn, rudder pedal pressure is reduced or neutralized.
Some aircraft also use differential braking to assist turns. This means using brake pressure on one side to help the aircraft pivot or tighten the turn.
Differential braking must be used carefully.
Brakes should be used:
● Smoothly
● Sparingly
● Only as required
● Never harshly unless needed for safety
Avoid pivoting the aircraft tightly around one stationary main wheel. This can place unnecessary twisting loads on the wheel, tire, landing gear, and strut assembly.

Weathercocking
Weathercocking is the tendency of an aircraft to turn into wind while taxiing.
This happens because the wind acts on the aircraft surfaces, especially the tail.
Tailwheel aircraft are more affected by weathercocking, but nosewheel aircraft can also be affected in strong wind.
The strength of weathercocking depends on:
● Wind velocity
● Taxi speed
● Aircraft type
● Landing gear arrangement
● Surface condition
● Direction of travel relative to the wind
When wind is strong, the pilot may need more active rudder and control input to maintain the desired taxi path.

Use of Controls While Taxiing
The flight controls still matter on the ground.
When taxiing in wind, the pilot uses the control column or yoke to reduce the chance of wind lifting a wing or affecting directional control.
The general principle is:
Position the controls to reduce the wind’s ability to lift or upset the aircraft.
When taxiing with a headwind or crosswind, the control column is usually positioned toward the wind so the upwind aileron is raised.
When taxiing with a strong quartering tailwind, the elevator is generally down, and the aileron on the side the wind is coming from is lowered.
The exact technique depends on aircraft type and wind direction, so the aircraft POH and instructor guidance must be followed.

Turning in Wind
Turning while taxiing in wind requires extra awareness.
When turning from downwind toward upwind, the aircraft may tend to turn into the wind more strongly than expected.
When turning out of wind, the pilot may need more positive rudder or brake input to prevent the aircraft from drifting or weathervaning back into wind.
Wind does not just affect the aircraft in flight. It affects the aircraft on the ground too.
A student should begin learning this early:
The wind is always part of the control problem.

Taxiing on Soft, Rough, Snowy, or Slippery Surfaces
Taxiing technique changes when the surface is soft, rough, muddy, snowy, icy, or contaminated.
On soft or rough surfaces, more power may be required to keep the aircraft moving. However, excessive power can create risk, especially if the propeller picks up mud, ice, snow, or debris.
On slippery surfaces, braking and steering effectiveness may be reduced.
The pilot should:
● Taxi slowly
● Maintain steady movement where appropriate
● Avoid abrupt braking
● Avoid unnecessary sharp turns
● Use manufacturer-recommended technique
● Ask for help or guidance when conditions are poor
If the aircraft stops in mud, snow, or slush, restarting movement may require more power. That can increase the risk of propeller damage from debris.
Prevention is better than forcing the aircraft to move after it gets stuck.

Initial Roll and Brake Check
When beginning to taxi, allow the aircraft to roll slowly at first.
The pilot should center the nosewheel or tailwheel and prevent any sudden swerve.
A brake check should be completed early while still clear of obstacles.
The brake check should be smooth and controlled. The goal is not to slam the aircraft to a stop. The goal is to confirm that the brakes respond correctly.

Instrument Checks While Taxiing
Taxiing also gives the pilot an opportunity to check certain flight instruments.
This must only be done when the aircraft is clear of obstacles and the pilot can safely divide attention.
Typical checks may include the turn-and-bank indicator, attitude indicator, and heading indicator.

These checks help confirm that the instruments respond logically to aircraft movement.

Marshalling
Sometimes an aircraft may receive outside guidance from a marshaller.
This can be useful in:
● Congested areas
● Icy conditions
● Strong winds
● Tight parking areas
● Poor visibility
● Areas with limited wingtip clearance
A marshaller should be competent and use standard signals.
The pilot remains responsible for the aircraft. If a signal is unclear or the situation looks unsafe, stop.

Good taxiing also includes good airport manners.
Do not block a taxiway unnecessarily.
If the aircraft requires a run-up, warm-up, checklist delay, or troubleshooting, position the aircraft where it will not block other traffic when possible.
A good pilot thinks about the whole movement area, not just their own aircraft.
