Objective of Air Exercise 2
The purpose of this exercise is to help you become familiar with the aircraft itself before you begin focusing on flying technique.
At this stage, you are not expected to understand every system in detail. Your job is to start building a basic map of the aircraft: what the major parts are called, what they generally do, what you will see during a pre-flight inspection, and what safety items deserve your attention before flight.
Think of this lesson as the bridge between “I went flying” and “I am starting to understand the machine I am training in.”

Your instructor will begin introducing you to the aircraft as a real operating machine, not just a vehicle you sit in.

Major Aircraft Parts
Before you can properly inspect or operate an aircraft, you need to know the basic language of the airplane.
The main parts include the wings, fuselage, tail surfaces, landing gear, engine area, propeller, and cockpit.
The wings produce lift. The fuselage is the main body of the aircraft. The tail surfaces help provide stability and control. The landing gear supports the aircraft on the ground. The propeller and engine produce thrust. The cockpit is where the pilot manages the aircraft, communicates, navigates, monitors instruments, and makes decisions.
You do not need to memorize every detail immediately. You do need to begin connecting names to real parts of the aircraft.

Main Control Surfaces
The aircraft is controlled through movable surfaces.
The ailerons are located on the wings and help control bank.
The elevator is located on the horizontal tail surface and helps control pitch.
The rudder is located on the vertical tail surface and helps control yaw.

The trim system helps reduce control pressure so the pilot does not have to hold constant force on the controls.

The cockpit can feel overwhelming at first because many items are visible at once.

At the student level, your role is mostly to observe, ask questions, and begin learning the flow.

Surface Contamination
Surface contamination means anything on the aircraft that should not be there before flight.
This can include frost, ice, snow, mud, standing water, or other contamination on wings, control surfaces, tail surfaces, propeller, windows, sensors, or other critical areas.
Even a small amount of contamination can matter because aircraft surfaces are shaped for airflow.
A beginner may look at an aircraft and think, “It mostly looks clean.”
A pilot learns to ask, “Is every critical surface actually clean and safe for flight?”

Aircraft also need to be properly parked and secured.
Depending on conditions and local procedures, this may involve brakes, chocks, tiedowns, control locks, pitot covers, doors, windows, and protecting the aircraft from wind or weather.

A pilot’s responsibility does not begin only when the engine starts.

Survival Equipment, ELT, and Passenger Briefing
Depending on the aircraft, operation, route, and environment, survival equipment and emergency equipment may be carried.
You should become familiar with the idea of an Emergency Locator Transmitter, commonly called an ELT. An ELT is designed to help locate an aircraft after an emergency.
You should also understand that passengers need a safety briefing. This may include seat belts, doors, emergency exits, emergency equipment, loose items, and what to do if the pilot gives instructions.
At this stage, you are not becoming an emergency expert. You are learning that preparation, briefing, and awareness are part of professional flying habits from the beginning.
