Exercise 1 – Familiarization (Discovery Flight)

Objective of a Discovery Flight?:

The purpose of your first flight is to introduce you to the aircraft, the flying environment, and the overall training experience.
You will sit in the position from which you will eventually learn to fly the aircraft. During this lesson, your primary role will be that of an observer while becoming comfortable with the sensations of flight and the view of the world from the air.
Depending on the circumstances, your instructor may also introduce basic aircraft taxiing and simple attitude and movement demonstrations.

What Can You Expect on Your Discovery Flight?:

For many students, this will be a completely new experience. Some aspects of aviation may initially appear complex or overwhelming. This is normal. Skills and knowledge that seem difficult today will become increasingly familiar as your training progresses.
You may be invited to place your hands lightly on the flight controls and your feet on the rudder pedals to begin developing an awareness of how the aircraft responds to control inputs. You may be invited to fly the aircraft momentairaly.
Your instructor will demonstrate that effective aircraft control is achieved through smooth, precise movements rather than large or abrupt inputs. Procedures that will be used throughout future training exercises may also be introduced.

Communication Expectations:

● Questions are encouraged.
● Ask for clarification whenever needed.
● Learn key landmarks around the airport.
● Begin identifying basic flight instruments.
● Start reporting information such as altitude and airspeed.

Situational Awareness:

One of your first responsibilities as a pilot is learning to maintain an effective lookout.
You will be asked to assist in scanning for other aircraft in the area. Aircraft can appear at any relative position and may be travelling in any direction.
If you observe another aircraft, report its location promptly to your instructor. The instructor will determine whether any action is required to maintain safe separation.

Why Does This Matter?

Every airline captain, bush pilot, instructor, and astronaut started with a first flight.
This lesson is not about perfect flying. It is about becoming comfortable in an entirely new environment and beginning your aviation journey.

Key Takeaways:

● Become familiar with the aircraft and flying environment.
● Experience the sensations of flight.
● Observe how the aircraft responds to control inputs.
● Learn the importance of clear communication.
● Begin developing instrument awareness.
● Start building effective visual scanning and traffic lookout habits.
● Understand that aviation skills are developed progressively through practice and training.
